2.   Instructional Innovation

General Psychology:  Participant in Freshman Connections Program.

Participated in an innovative program designed to bring faculty from various disciplines, residential and advising staff, and quality students together to find ways to make the freshman year a success for as many incoming students as possible.  The goal was to create a strong sense of a learning community by making connections between courses and in and out-of-class experiences.

Honor’s Thesis Mentor:  Women’s Dialogues about Domestic Violence

Closely mentored an Honor’s student interested in learning more about qualitative research methods for studying domestic violence.  Assisted the student in securing funds through a competitive undergraduate research grant and psychological science fellowship for the development and execution of a focus group study in a local domestic violence shelter.

Quantitative Methods in Psychology: Application of the Jigsaw Method (See C3. Publication and C5. Conference Presentation).

Implemented a “jigsaw classroom” technique to help students understand statistical procedures.  Worksheets were divided into 2-4 complementary steps that were distributed to different groups of students.  Students with the same step completed it together and then collaborated with other classmates to complete the entire problem.  Students reported that the activity helped them understand a statistical procedure, used class time efficiently, and increased the variety of learning experiences available in the course.

Social Psychology:  Using Narratives as a Teaching Tool (See C5. Conference Presentation).

Implemented a reading and writing assignment based on a compelling narrative of a biracial male growing up in Muncie, Indiana in the 1950s (Life on the Color Line).  The narrative was referred to throughout the semester as we discussed social psychological concepts and theories discussed in the course textbook and lecture.  Students noted the usefulness of the assignment in relating social psychological principles to real world experiences, opening people’s eyes to others’ experiences, and engaging students in interdisciplinary learning (e.g., history) and personal reflection.

Psychology of Women:  Looking Toward the Future (See C5. Conference Presentation).

Implemented a cooperative learning experience that incorporated older women’s issues into the curriculum.  In groups, students researched a topic related to women at midlife and beyond, wrote a paper, and presented their findings to their classmates.  Some groups also developed videos or pamphlets related to their topics. Exceptional projects were presented at the annual Psi Chi poster session at Ball State University.
